When was the last time you took a refresher course on your winter driving tips? Well, if it’s been a while and you’re planning on heading into chilly temperatures this holiday season, this week’s blog will be a benefit to you. We encourage you to take a look at those tips below and be sure to put them to good use this winter. We want you and your passengers to stay safe so please use them! Be alert and allow more distance between your vehicle and others. Use your brakes carefully.  Brake early and carefully as it takes more time and distance to stop in adverse conditions. Don’t use “cruise control” in wintry conditions. Be courteous to other drivers. Keep to the right except to pass, using turn signals to alert other drivers of your intentions. Always buckle your seat belt and require your passengers to do the same. Reduce speeds. Remember that the posted speed limit is for ideal travel conditions. Allow for extra travel time or consider delaying trips if the weather is inclement. Don’t use your hand-held cell phone while driving, as mandated by law. Use your headlights, as required by law. Hey there Kia lovers! We’re back with another week of helpful car-owning information and this week, we hope you’ll put this information to good use before winter creeps upon us! When to know whether your tire's tread is in need of replacing - this can sometimes be a difficult thing to understand. There are measurements to pay close, close attention to and if you don’t, you might put yourself at risk. So how can we keep you and your passengers out of harm’s way? Well, just check out how to check your tire tread below and be sure to schedule a service appointment at your earliest convenience to have your tires serviced before winter hits! Your tire tread is still in good shape when the tread is at least 4/32 inches deep or deeper. This is your best case scenario but not always what we find when checking our tread. It’s time to replace those tires soon when they reach 3/32”, so if your tires fall here, be sure to keep a close eye on them and perhaps make a service appointment for somewhere down the line. And it’s critical to replace your tires as soon as possible when they hit 2/32” or below. If you’re at this point, hurry on in today and have your tires replaced because keeping you safe is a #1 priority! Now, how are you supposed to check that tread? We got you covered there! Below you will find a few ways to check your tread and for most of them, you’ll only need a few coins to get the job done! Take a look and let us know if you are in need of help! The penny test Insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down into the tread facing toward you. If you can see all of the head, your tread depth is less than 2/32” and it is time to replace your tires. The quarter test Do the same test with a quarter and if the tread reaches Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining. Which means your tires are still happy and healthy - no need to worry about replacing, just yet! No change? No problem! Take a look at your tread wear indicator bar that is molded into the tread of your tires. Bars are located at the bottom of tread grooves in multiple locations; when these bars are visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, your tire has no more than 2/32” of tread left. Everyone takes a turn guessing at what you could be seeing, the person who guesses correctly gets to start the next round. License Plate Map: Grab a clipboard, a color-less printed out copy of the U.S. map, and some crayons! When you see a license plate from a certain state, color it in! This will keep kids occupied for hours as they race to be the first one to get all 50 states! Spot The Car: This is a great game for older children who can differentiate the difference between vehicle models. Instead of looking for different states like we did in the Licensee Plate Map game, you’re looking for different models. You can make a printable scavenger hunt list to check off when that model is found. The first one to check off all models wins! The Alphabet Race: One adult picks a letter from A-Z and whoever spots that letter out the window first (billboard, cows, tires, for example) gets to go next. This game is truly endless and can help pass the time, especially with small children who are learning new items! 20 Questions: Another popular and easy game! Someone in the car thinks of a specific object and other passengers take turns guessing what the person, place or thing could be and can be answered with a simple yes or no. Springtime is right around the corner and that means a lot of rain is destined to head our way. And what happens when it rains a lot? That’s right - things get muddy. And if you’ve ever been struck with no idea what to do, you’re not alone. This week, I am here to help you get out of a muddy situation. So, check out that guide below and stop in to see our team to upgrade your ride to a more capable Kia vehicle! Be prepared for anything and everything. You may never know what will happen out there on the road and while that’s okay, we want to help set you up for success. Keep your vehicle’s tires at the correct PSI and with good tread. Also, if you do not have roadside assistance, it is worth looking into especially if you live in an area where muddy conditions occur frequently. Be sure that your vehicle is always packed with emergency supplies such as blankets, small shovel, tow cables, and other items alike. Rock your vehicle out. This can be a tricky way to free your vehicle and it can also be dangerous for your vehicle, so we only recommend doing this a few times. Keeping your wheels straight, gently step on the gas pedal and begin switching from drive to reverse. This creates a rocking movement and can sometimes free your vehicle from the mud by gaining traction. As we mentioned above, only do this a few times as this action can do damage to your engine or can create a deeper rut for you to sink into. Add traction. Vehicles tend to get stuck when there is little to no traction for the tires to grip onto. Whether this is due to your lack of tread on your tires or because your tread is gummed up with mud - you still need to get some traction in order to get yourself out. Use anything you have or can find, sticks, floor mats, a blanket or a traction aid, and place in front of your tires. This will help your tires grip and make its way out of the mud. Gently press on the gas and if you feel yourself moving forward continue doing what you’re doing. But if your vehicle isn’t budging, this won’t work. Call for help. At this point, you’ve done almost everything you can do by yourself unless you have friends, ask them for a push. But if your vehicle is still stuck in the mud this may be a good time to call roadside assistance, a tow truck or a friend to help tow your truck out of the mud. If you find yourself stuck on a busy roadway, this step might be the first one you should take instead of risking your safety. You are the shot caller - be safe and make the right choice.
