Back-to-School Safety: Part Two
King Kia knows that September is a busy time a year. The kids are back in school, and your mornings and afternoons are a bit more hectic. That’s why now more than ever, it’s important to remember to drive safely and carefully. AAA has recently released a list of safety tips titled, “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” and we’ve been sharing the list with you. If you missed the last blog, you can catch up here. Then, take a look at the next three tips on the list!
4.) Reverse Responsibly – We love the Reverse Backup Camera equipped in many of our New Kia Vehicles, but many people rely on it too heavily. Blind spots are still possible, that’s why it’s important to check your surroundings before reversing. Make sure there are no kids in the driveway or parking space you’re backing out of. Also, check the roads and sidewalks for any nearby kids. Once you’re good to go, back up slowly and carefully.
5.) Watch for Bicycles – Kids on bicycles tend to be clumsy, wobbly, and may even fall off their bike. Talk to your own kids about biking safety and make sure they’re all wearing a properly fitted helmet. And remember, if you approach a child bicyclist on the road, be sure to allow them at least three feet of passing distance between their bike and your car, just to be safe!
6.) Talk to Your Teen – Teenagers may not be walking or riding their bike to school, but they’re equally at risk of an accident behind the wheel. Every year, car accidents are responsible for more teeanger deaths than any other factor. Make sure you’re talking with your teenager about safe driving practices, especially during the hours of 3 PM and 7 PM, when most accidents occur.
King Kia would like to wish all of our customers a safe, healthy, and happy school year! And remember, if you’re in need of a back-to-school vehicle or would like to learn more about our advanced safety technology, drop by and see us for a test drive!

Back-to-School Safety: Part One
It’s officially back-to-school season, and even if you’re not a parent or teacher, AAA has some important safety tips that could help you save a life this September! You may have already noticed your quiet summer work commute is now filled with students riding their bikes and walking to school, and with that comes an increased chance of an accident. AAA reports that in the past ten years, one in every four children that was hit by a car was killed between 3 PM and 7 PM, which are prime after-school hours. There are plenty of things you can do to avoid these types of accidents, and AAA has compiled a list for you as a part of their “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign. Check out the first three recommendations below.
1.) Slow Down – During certain hours, most school zones have a reduced speed limit. This is not merely a recommendation – slowing your speed from 35 MPH to 25 MPH means you can more stop easily for pedestrians, and, if you do hit someone, they will be two-thirds less likely to die from the collision. When driving through a school zone, make sure to observe the reduced speed limit and check the hours it is in effect.
2.) Stop Completely – Stopping completely at stop signs may seem unnecessary, especially if you’re running late and there are no other vehicles in sight. In fact, nearly 1 in every 3 drivers roll through stop signs as opposed to coming to a full halt. Many child pedestrians walking through school zones or neighborhoods assume you see them and that you’re going to stop, and that is not always the case. To avoid an incident, come to a complete stop, and take an extra second to check the sidewalks and crosswalks for children.
3.) Eliminate Distractions – It doesn’t matter if you’re an excellent driver, excellent multitasker, or both, distracted driving is dangerous. If you take your eyes off the road for even a short time like two seconds, you can double your chance of crashing into something, or even worse, someone. Kids do not always follow the rules of the road, and can abruptly cross the street or emerge from two parked cars, which makes them hard to predict and spot. When you’re behind the wheel during school hours, eliminate distracting items like food and your cellphone.
Next week’s blog will feature the final three tips from AAA, so check back to learn about reversing responsibly, watching for bicycles, and talking to your teenage driver!

Kia Pumps the B.R.A.K.E.S.
September is Back-to-School Month, which means that we will see an influx of teenage drivers back on the road, heading to and from school with their friends. While it is exciting for them, it is also scary. Within their first month of driving, almost 50 percent of teens are involved in an accident, and after three years, that percentage climbs up to 89 percent. Two of these teens were John and James Hubert, who were killed in an accident back in January 2008. Their father, Doug Herbert, wanted to prevent this tragedy from happening to others. Shortly after, he founded the B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Proactive Driving Program. B.R.A.K.E.S., which stands for “Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe,” offers teenage drivers a chance to practice and test their reactions to on-road situations in a controlled environment. Some of the tests include Car Control and Recovery, Accident Avoidance, Distracted Driving, Drop Wheel Recovery, and Panic Braking. Kia Motors, who deeply cares about the safety of everyone on the road, provided B.R.A.K.E.S. with 44 vehicles to help this program become a nationwide success.
