Check all of your lights:

• Check all of your operational lights including headlights, taillights, parking lights, brake lights, and emergency lights. Replace any and all broken or worn out lights. Take a step further and clean all of your lights to ensure you can see others and others can see you. 

Replace Wiper Blades

• Even in the fall, we experience lots of rain, and then when the winter months arrive we will be dealing with snow as well. Do yourself a favor and replace your old worn down wiper with some shiny new ones that will help you see in any condition. 

Make sure heater/defroster works

• You will hate yourself when you wake up to a frosted window and a broken defroster. Aka you will be out in the freezing cold while it’s pitch black out scraping the ice off your window…avoid this awful scenario and make sure your heat is working properly!

Have your battery checked

• A fully charged battery is necessary for the cold weather. The cold weather can actually kill your battery faster than warm weather, so make sure your battery is all charged up to avoid being stranded in the cold! 

Refill cooling system

• It’s always a good idea to check your coolant level! if the level is too low, add a 50/50 solution of water and coolant to allow proper antifreeze capability. It may be necessary to refill the cooling system.

Check all fluids

• While you’re at it, check all of your fluid levels! This includes windshield washer fluid, transmission, brake, and power steering fluids.  Make sure they are all at or above minimum safe levels and refill as necessary.

Check your coolant system 

• When temperatures are rising, it’s important to keep cool. Ourselves and our vehicles. In addition to checking up on the coolant fluid levels, it’s important to check the state of the hoses and the coolant reservoir. Any leaks should be addressed as soon as possible. And hoses should be firm. 

Windshield wipers 

• While it is summer, it is bound to rain at a point to help cool things off. That means you need a good set of wipers that will keep excess water off your windshield and your vision clear. A good habit to start is checking on your wipers every time you stop for gas or change them every oil change. 

Engine belts 

• Over time your engine belt can become loose, deteriorate, and start to squeal. It’s important to have your engine belt checked to ensure there are no cracks, missing pieces, and that there is the right amount of tension. 

Tires 

• While you should be checking your tires year-round, summer is a great time to ensure that tire pressure levels are correct and you still have a good amount of tread still. Summer is the season of road trips, so it’s important to keep up to date with your tires. Plus, be sure to check up on your spare tire as well. 

Air Filters 

• Winter is known for clogging your windshield-washer nozzle and your car’s air filters. So, when summer hits, it’s important to make sure these areas are clean and ready to go. Sometimes you can change filters yourself but if you’re not sure, ask a technician!
